Coherently with the choice to link all the activities of the institution to themes concerning the processing of grain even the furniture was manufactured by referring to typical instruments of this activity. Chairs, for example, were derived  from the union of a folded basket for bread transport, that took the place of the chair sit, and a bread shovel, that took the place of the chair back. ITALY. The tradition of giving a shovel bearing the nickname of each academician and a motto related to him was interrupted between the XVIII and the XX century (already in XVII not every academician had his own shovel ). Refreshed after the restart of the lexicographic activity of the Academy (1964), the tradition of having an own "Pala" was followed also by few academicians. ITALY. Florence, 10th October 2011. Elisabetta Benucci, head of the Academy archive, infront of a closet contained notes of past Academicians for the realization of the fifth edition of the “Vocadolario delgli Accademici della Crusca”. Notes, taken from Florence National Library stockrooms, are used for trying to complete the fifth edition, interrupted at the definition of the word “ozono” due to the temporary closure of the Academy during 1923.ITALY. Referring to the semantic scope of the grain and its processing chosen by the Academy, as the custom of the time (XVI and XVII), as an outward manifestation of their institution, the "Pala", in every way similar to those used to put bread into the oven, reported the Academician nickname , combined with a pictorial representation of it and a motto, usually taken from Dante or Petrarch, on the intentions of the person in question.
