Digital Asset Management Pricing Compared: Is LightRocket the Best-Value DAM on the Market?

Picking the right digital asset management platform is rarely straightforward. With so many vendors competing for your attention, and most of them reluctant to show you their prices upfront, it can be hard to know where to start. We're here to cut through the noise and compare DAM pricing across the market, from the big enterprise players to the more agile, transparent alternatives, so you can make a confident, informed decision.

Spoilt for Choice: Navigating the Digital Asset Management Market

If you're reading this then you're likely in the process of looking for a digital asset management (DAM) platform and have got far enough to realise there's lots of choice. The big players quickly appear on your 'radar': Canto, Orange Logic, Bynder. Followed by smaller vendors: Asset Bank, ResourceSpace, and LightRocket. Or perhaps you've tasked your LLM to help you source a list of vendors. In either case, you've likely found yourself spoilt for choice.

And like any consumer confronted with choice, you know these DAM systems are similar in some ways and different in others. Sometimes the differences are major, sometimes subtle.

Thus, the process of product evaluation and comparison begins. For the DAMs in your candidate list, the game is on.

The DAM Pricing Transparency Problem

It starts with your first online searches. The big names have usually paid their way to the top of your search results. They've optimized their visibility for certain keywords, driving your queries to their websites.

You start clicking. Browsing homepages. Everyone trumpets their core value (of course they do): 'Save money', 'Manage Content', 'Manage your Brand'.

First impressions count. You glean a sense of identity from the style of the homepage. Is it a big corporate entity? Or a smaller, friendlier (more service-oriented) organization?

You dig a little deeper. How about price?

Pricing information is based on publicly available data and third-party estimates at the time of publication. Orange Logic, Canto, and Bynder do not publish pricing publicly. Figures may vary depending on your organisation's specific requirements. We recommend contacting vendors directly for an accurate quote.

Here's where it starts to get interesting. Those glitzy sites, the big players at the top of your search results, they're usually coy about price. They put a pricing page on their site, but once you get there, no prices are to be seen. Instead, there are plenty of details about just how amazing their service is, and how if you'd like to find out more, you'll need to contact their sales team.

That's when you hesitate. You're interested but are you interested enough to hand over your email and subject yourself to an onslaught of eager sales pitches? Plus, there's the suspicion that a company that doesn't want to show its prices might have something to hide.

Just how expensive is their platform?

You start to do some cursory research. Orange Logic quickly comes in at an estimated US$ 60,000 a year for a basic plan. Wow, that's big money. Canto and Bynder come in a little way behind, but you're still looking at significant 5 figure numbers for an implementation that covers 20 or so users. And once you're engaged in their sales pipeline, you can expect plenty of follow-up which could be time-consuming and perhaps, let's face it, maybe even a little irritating.

How Do Mid-Tier DAM Vendors Compare?

You widen your search. How about those companies further down the list? The ones that caught your attention on LinkedIn, that somebody mentioned a few months ago when you were enquiring about DAM systems. What's the difference between those smaller, less visible, companies and the big players at the top of your Google search?

Price is one of the first things you notice. They certainly seem more reasonably priced. The veil of secrecy has been lifted. Asset Bank, ResourceSpace and LightRocket all show their prices online. It feels transparent and reassuring.

But be careful to read the small print.

Asset Bank's prices don't include set-up and there's no mention of fees for migration. Asset Bank is also silent on the cost of adding new users and additional storage. There are clearly some grey areas that could push the price tag, already US$ 14,799 a year for their 'most popular' plan, considerably higher.

ResourceSpace is another DAM vendor that aims to be upfront about its pricing. Part of their strategy is to claim their platform is free – the only catch is that you'll need to pay an annual support fee; which isn't particularly cheap.

Unlike Asset Bank, who list their yearly fees, ResourceSpace displays a monthly rate, with discounts available for those who commit to multi-year contracts.

ResourceSpace's pricing can get confusing and even feel a bit misleading. The company claims that since the system is open source, there is "no restriction or cost per user". And yet their second-tier 'Business Cloud' plan – which comes in at a tidy US$ 12,771 a year – is for up to 100 users. What happens if you go above 100 users? The next tier in their plans includes 500 users but costs a hefty US$ 22,594.

And that's not all; public access, which is not available for their best value plan, is listed as 'optional' for all their plans from Business Cloud upwards. Which means if you want to have a public portal for your archives, you can expect to pay even more – though ResourceSpace don't say how much.

So where does that leave the buyer who wants transparency, value, and a comprehensive feature set, without the guesswork?

LightRocket: The Best-Value Digital Asset Management Platform

Like Asset Bank and ResourceSpace, LightRocket is very transparent about its pricing. It's also the best deal on the market (compared to competitors with similar product offerings) – and perhaps the best kept secret too.

Used by major global organisations like the European Broadcast Union (EBU) and the International Organization for Migration (IOM), LightRocket's 'Standard' plan, which comes with a public portal and up to 500 users, comes in at just US$ 9,480 per year, which is less than half of what ResourceSpace charges for the same number of users and no public access. LightRocket doesn't list set-up fees because these are included by default. In most cases, migration can be performed quickly and without charge.

Of course, the DAM market is broad and wide, with an extensive range of competing services to choose from. But few can boast decades of experience, and even fewer offer such a comprehensive feature set, including all-important AI-driven functionality, for such competitive fees. If what you're looking for is a DAM that's honest about its pricing, comprehensive in its features, and backed by real support, LightRocket might just be worth a closer look.
